Roy Williams, an all-american safety in special teams for the Cincinnati Bengals, was drafted into the NFL in the first round as the 8th pick in 2002. That was when he first debuted for the Dallas Cowboys. Before becoming a succcessful NFL star, he was a starter on the undefeated 2000 Oklahoma Sooners team. The Sooners won 2000 NCAA DI-A championships, setting a school record for tackles for loss by a defensive back with 12. This was all during his sophomore season there. The following year in 2001, which was his junior year, Williams won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nations top overall defensive player and also won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nations top defensive back. A unanimous selection to both the All-America and All-big 12 teams, and named big 12 Defensive player of the year.

In 2006, while playing with the Dallas Cowboys, he was briefly engaged to the R&B Singer, Kelly Rowland, from the R&B group, Destiny’s Child. He is also the nephew of survivor: Marquesas winner Vecepia Towery. In high school at James Logan High School, located in Union City, California, he played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. So, he was a well-rounded football athlete. Williams with his many accolades, started the Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation to help single mothers raise their children, just as he was raised by his single mother. Today Williams still dominates in the NFL, and will continue to be a mentor and helper to those around him, and coming up under him.

Though he would come to be one of the hardest hitting and most feared strong safeties of his decade of college football, Roy Williams entered the Oklahoma Football program during one of its low periods. The Sooner’s were wrapping up a losing season, the last of the three preceding the Bob Stoops football reign for Oklahoma University. Before the powerhouse safety that would go on to win a place in five pro bowls became the star he is today he had to struggle through his freshman year.
Coming from James Logan High School of Union City California, as a redshirt freshman Roy Williams was listed as six foot two and a hundred and ninety pounds. In examining his freshman year, there are two numbers that will jump out at you – his weight and the team’s record.
The highlight of Roy William’s freshman year must be seen as his weight training and physical development. His starting weight of 190 in the 1998 season versus the weight he is listed at the following year, 215 shows that he worked hard and benefited greatly from a college weight training regimen and a year of development. This set the stage for the explosive hits he would become known for in the years to come.
The other number to note is zero. Despite his talent Roy Williams was not given any chances to produce on the field as a freshman and I personally feel this contributed to the 5-6 record of the Sooner’s. Though a boon for Williams in the long run, no playing time must definitely be considered the lowlight of his freshman year.
