Oklahoma Sooner Freshman College Highlights and lowlights

Though he would come to be one of the hardest hitting and most feared strong safeties of his decade of college football, Roy Williams entered the Oklahoma Football program during one of its low periods. The Sooner’s were wrapping up a losing season, the last of the three preceding the Bob Stoops football reign for Oklahoma University. Before the powerhouse safety that would go on to win a place in five pro bowls became the star he is today he had to struggle through his freshman year.
Coming from James Logan High School of Union City California, as a redshirt freshman Roy Williams was listed as six foot two and a hundred and ninety pounds. In examining his freshman year, there are two numbers that will jump out at you – his weight and the team’s record.
The highlight of Roy William’s freshman year must be seen as his weight training and physical development. His starting weight of 190 in the 1998 season versus the weight he is listed at the following year, 215 shows that he worked hard and benefited greatly from a college weight training regimen and a year of development. This set the stage for the explosive hits he would become known for in the years to come.
The other number to note is zero. Despite his talent Roy Williams was not given any chances to produce on the field as a freshman and I personally feel this contributed to the 5-6 record of the Sooner’s. Though a boon for Williams in the long run, no playing time must definitely be considered the lowlight of his freshman year.
